Feature · AI search visibility

When an AI answers for your store, use your words.

Shopify put your catalog inside ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app. The products travel automatically. The answers don’t — unless you publish them somewhere an assistant can read. That’s this.

01 · What changed

Shoppers started asking before they arrive.

Agentic Storefronts became publicly available in March 2026, letting millions of Shopify merchants sell to ChatGPT users directly. It runs on the Universal Commerce Protocol — the open standard Shopify co-developed with Google, supported by Walmart, Target, Etsy, American Express, Mastercard, Stripe and Visa. In June, the Spring ’26 Edition removed the approval requirement for the agentic layer entirely and opened the Catalog API to any developer with an API key.

So a growing share of the deciding now happens somewhere you can’t see: a conversation between a shopper and an assistant, before they ever load your product page. The only thing you can send into that conversation is well-structured, accurate information about what you sell.

An assistant with thin data still gives the shopper an answer. It just isn’t yours.

02 · How it works

One knowledge base. Three surfaces.

You write an answer once, in your voice, grounded in facts you approve. PlainSaid publishes it everywhere a shopper might ask the question — including the two places you can’t reach by editing your theme.

AI assistants

PlainSaid writes to Shopify’s native Q&A metaobjects — the layer the Storefront MCP exposes to the agent ecosystem, so assistants quote you rather than improvise.

ChatGPT · Copilot · Gemini · AI Mode
03 · Control

Grounded answers, or none at all.

Reaching more surfaces is only worth it if what reaches them is right. Four deliberate constraints keep an assistant from representing your store with a guess.

Only complete answers travel

PlainSaid surfaces questions shoppers asked that you haven’t answered yet. Those are held back, never published. A half-written answer is worse than no answer.

Your phrasing, preserved

Mark answers to return word-for-word — the ones where the wording is the point, like ingredient and compliance language. Set phrases the AI must never use.

Renames don’t orphan you

Published entries key to the immutable product ID, not the handle. A merchandising change in March won’t quietly disconnect your answers in June.

Edits propagate everywhere

Change an answer and it updates on the page, in your structured data and in the agent layer together. No second copy, no stale answer outliving the truth.

04 · What to publish

The questions a photograph can’t answer.

An assistant has no images and no size-chart graphic. Answers that say “see the chart above” are invisible to it. These are the archetypes worth writing down first — and they’re the same ones your support inbox has been answering by hand for years.

Fit & sizing“Do these run true to size?” — Not “true to size” on its own — the measured comparison. Which of your other products it matches, what to do between sizes, how it fits a wide foot.
Compatibility“Will this fit through a 30-inch doorway?” — Dimensions, mounts, older models, standard fittings. The questions where a wrong guess becomes a return.
Materials“Is this third-party tested?” — What it's made of, where it's made, which certifications it carries — and, said plainly, which it doesn't.
Care“What happens if I put it in the wash?” — Durability over months and years, not just the care-label symbols a machine can't see.
Suitability“Is this right for someone like me?” — The most underrated answer a brand can publish. Assistants recommend confidently; telling them who a product doesn't suit prevents recommendations that end in refunds.
Policy“Can I return this if it doesn't fit?” — Return windows, warranty terms and shipping realities that differ product by product.

A useful test: take the last twenty pre-purchase questions your team answered. How many are published anywhere a machine can read? That gap is the work — and PlainSaid groups the questions your own shoppers have already asked, with the gaps flagged, so you’re not starting from a blank page.

05 · Proof

See which answers preceded revenue.

Visibility is easy to claim and hard to evidence. PlainSaid ties shopper questions to the orders that follow — question, cart, order — so you can see what your answers preceded instead of inferring it from a traffic chart. Attribution shown in the dashboard is high-confidence matching only.

06 · Questions

Answered plainly, as you’d expect.

Do I need to do anything to appear in AI shopping surfaces?

For catalog data, no — existing Shopify merchants get access to Agentic Storefronts automatically through the admin. Your products, prices and availability flow through without setup. What doesn't flow automatically is the answers to questions your catalog data can't express, which is what PlainSaid publishes.

How is this different from FAQ schema on my product page?

JSON-LD on your page helps search engines understand your content, and PlainSaid publishes it. But Shopify's AI-agent layer is a separate, native destination that assistants query directly through the Storefront MCP. PlainSaid writes to both from one knowledge base, so you author an answer once and it lands on your page, in your structured data, and in the agent layer.

Can the AI make things up about my products?

PlainSaid answers only from the knowledge base you control, and syndicates only answers you have actually written. Questions still awaiting your answer are held back rather than published — an assistant should never represent your store with a blank or a guess. You also set phrases the answer must never use and framings you prefer.

What happens when I change a product handle?

Published entries are keyed to the immutable product ID rather than the handle, so a merchandising rename doesn't orphan your published Q&A. Edits propagate to every surface together, and removing an answer removes it everywhere.

Can I turn the AI-agent sync off?

Yes — it's a per-shop setting, on by default. PlainSaid writes clearly namespaced entries that stay distinct from any Q&A you manage by hand in Shopify, and switching the sync off cleanly removes PlainSaid's entries on your next publish.

How do I know whether any of it is working?

PlainSaid ties shopper questions to the orders that follow, so you can see which answers preceded revenue instead of inferring it. Attribution shown in the dashboard is high-confidence matching — a question, a cart, and the order it became.
